Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to construct a novel maximum power tracking control system for the direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) of the wind energy conversion system (WECS) to solve the following problems: how to effectively eliminate the system’s model parameter disturbances and speed up the dynamic performance of the system; and how to eliminate harmonics in WECS under different wind speeds.

Design/methodology/approach

To obtain the maximum output power of PMSG at WECS under different wind speeds, the following issues should be considered: (1) how to effectively eliminate the system’s model parameter disturbances and speed up the dynamic performance of the system; and (2) how to suppress system harmonics. For Problem 1, adding dq compensation factors to active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) for the current loop realizes the dq axis decoupling control, which speeds up the dynamic performance of the system. For Problem 2, the resonant controller is introduced into the ADRC for the current loop to suppress harmonic current in WECS under different wind speeds.

Findings

The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed control method is simpler and more reliable than conventional controllers for maximum power tracking.

Originality/value

Compared with traditional controllers, the proposed controller can speed up the dynamic performance of the system and suppress the current harmonic effectively, thus better achieving maximum power tracking.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to mainly discuss how to suppress the disturbances accurately and effectively in the wind energy conversion system (WECS) of the direct drive surface mount permanent magnet synchronous generator (SPMSG).

Design/methodology/approach

The disturbances in wind energy conversion system have seriously negative influence on the maximum power tracking performance. Therefore, a model predictive control (MPC) method of model compensation active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) strategy in parallel connection is designed, which optimizes the speed tracking performance compared with the existing control strategy of MPC and ADRC in series connection. Based on the traditional ADRC, a multi parameter model compensation ADRC strategy is added to better estimate the disturbances. At the same time, a torque feedback strategy is added to compensate the disturbances caused by load torque and further optimize the speed loop tracking performance.

Findings

The simulation results show that the designed control method has advantages than the traditional control method in compensating the disturbances and tracking the maximum power more effectively.

Originality/value

The simulation results show that the designed control method is superior to the traditional proportional control method, which can better compensate the internal and external disturbances and track the maximum power more effectively.

Abstract

Purpose

China’s workforce is currently experiencing increased career-related stress. Employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) may be used to help employees overcome these challenges. Little is known about how ESOPs affect employee career development. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between ESOPs and employee career sustainability and provide guidance for corporate management.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors employed a multiple linear regression model using a sample of 614 companies that implemented ESOPs between July 2014 and September 2017.

Findings

Employees’ career development benefited when ESOP funds originated from employee compensation and self-raised funds, and when the plan’s stock came from a source other than the secondary market. Career development also improved when employees and senior executives held a higher proportion of a firm’s total shares. In addition, the benefits to employee career development were greater in manufacturing enterprises, non-state-owned enterprises, and in Southern China.

Research limitations/implications

This study combined individual and organization research using person–organization fit theory and demonstrated that well-designed ESOPs are beneficial for career stability and sustainability. This work was based on data from Chinese companies; future studies could usefully investigate the effects of ESOPs in other countries and their particular impact in technology-intensive industries.

Practical implications

Decision makers in firms or government can use ESOPs to address employees’ career-related stress and challenges, especially during industry transformation.

Originality/value

The paper fills a gap in ESOPs research by showing the positive effects of ESOPs on career development.

Abstract

A new approach for solving steady incompressible Navier‐Stokes equations is presented in this paper. This method extends the upwind Riemann‐problem‐based techniques to viscous flows, which is obtained by applying modified artificial compressibility Navier‐Stokes equations and fully discrete high‐order numerical schemes for systems of advection‐diffusion equations. In this approach, utilizing the local Riemann solutions the steady incompressible viscous flows can be solved in a similar way to that of inviscid hyperbolic conservation laws. Numerical experiments on the driven cavity problem indicate that this approach can give satisfactory solutions.

Abstract

Purpose

Nowadays, online platforms which provide products or services try to implement their homegrown communities to facilitate users' social interactions. Reviewers' activities in these communities can reflect their interests. Based on the theory of homophily, the authors aim to explore the impacts of the reviewer preference similarity and opinion similarity on the rate of product diffusion.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the authors construct reviewer similarity network based on their common interests and propose typical network metrics to measure reviewer preference similarity. Second, the authors measure reviewer opinion similarity with natural language processing. Finally, based on a panel data from an online video platform in China, both the fixed-effect and random-effect panel data models are constructed.

Findings

The authors find that reviewer preference similarity has a positive effect on the product diffusion, whereas reviewer opinion similarity has a negative effect on the diffusion. Furthermore, temporal distance moderates the relationship between reviewer similarity and the product diffusion. As a double-edged sword, review preference similarity hinders product diffusion in the initial phase, whereas benefits it in the later phase. Reviewer opinion similarity is always detrimental to product diffusion, especially in the initial phase.

Originality/value

This paper extends the understanding of homophily from the micro peer level to the group level by constructing reviewers' similarity network and highlights the important role of reviewer preference similarity and opinion similarity in product diffusion. The results also provide important insights for managers to design and implement diversity strategies for better product adoption in the community context.

This study aims to examine the moderating effect of cultural conditions on the relationship between environmental performance and environmental disclosure.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the moderating effect of cultural conditions on the relationship between environmental performance and environmental disclosure.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used meta-analysis technique to examine 100 effect sizes from 43 studies published between 1982 and 2023 to integrate the existing results and to detect causes contributing to variability of results across studies.

Findings

There is a significant positive relationship between environmental performance and environmental disclosure. Further, the authors found that cultures with long-term orientation positively moderated the relationship, whereas cultures with high uncertainty avoidance and indulgence negatively moderated it.

Research limitations/implications

This study did not account for the problem of endogeneity between environmental performance and environmental disclosure because most of the already published studies included in the authors’ meta-analysis did not address this issue.

Practical implications

This research provides regulators and policymakers insights on the influence of cultural factors on environmental disclosure and performance, critical information to consider when adopting, or revising social and environmental policy and regulations within a country.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first meta-analysis study examining different cultural dimensions influencing the relationship between environmental performance and environmental disclosure and contributes new knowledge to the literature on determinants of environmental disclosure.

Abstract

Purpose

Important reserves of oil and gas, which are left to be discovered and produced, are mainly concentrated in challenging locations and under severe conditions such as high pressure (HP)/high temperature (HT). The presence of aggressive environments including H2S, CO2 and chlorides plus HP/HT causes a series of corrosion problems, which cost the oil industry billions of dollars a year. Thus, there is an increasing challenge for tubes (i.e. oil country tubular goods, for short, OCTG) used in producing oil and gas. The purpose of this study is to summarize different kinds of corrosion problems and their mitigation, to more efficiently protect OCTG from corrosion.

Design/methodology/approach

To effectively select proper mitigation methods, the mechanism of corrosion must be understood, which can be classified into four categories: sweet corrosion, sour corrosion, galvanic corrosion and microbiologically induced corrosion. Also, the effects of environmental and material factors on the corrosion rate are presented. Subsequently, current technology of mitigating these corrosion problems has been discussed, including the development of materials, application of chemical inhibitors and application of protective layers.

Findings

It is stressed that limits exist for each individual mitigation method; therefore, a careful balance between economic life of OCTG and safety in operation is required.

Originality/value

The main purpose of this essay is to give a brief review and detailed introduction and analysis about those technologies.
